Why Real Employee Reviews Matter We all do it. Whether we are booking a holiday, buying a car or the latest smartphone, or looking for a reliable trades person. Reviews matter and we believe them. But now theyre filtering into the world of work. The trend for checking reviews before making significant purchases is filtering into the world of work, according to new research by BPS World. It found that jobseekers are increasingly reliant on researching their potential employers online and keen to have a number of job offers on the table before making their decision. The survey found that more than three quarters of employees (79%) would check out an employer online before accepting a job offer, and 74% of employers doing the same when hiring someone. Facebook ranked the second most likely place a potential employee with LinkedIn and Glassdoor proving less popular choices. Researching potential employers online seems to be a recent trend, with 62% of employees admitting they didnt check out their current employer before accepting their job offer. Simon Conington, Founder and MD of BPS World said: These findings suggest that the open, consumer-led platform of Facebook is preferred for creating a truer picture of what the potential employer could be like, in a similar way to the travellers own photos on TripAdvisor. There is an honesty about what people share online that often isnt reflected in the way a company presents its employer brand. This research proves just how discerning both bosses doing the hiring, and those applying for jobs now are. Both bosses and employees therefore need to think about how their company and themselves are talked about and presented online, and if theres anything negative, controversial or inflammatory then they need to get it resolved or removed. Ignoring it could mean companies miss out on hiring a talented team member, or that an employee loses out on landing their dream job. So how can you make sure your employees say nice things about your company? Here are 4 expert tips for you. 1. Be human Steve Ward, Talent Attraction Strategist, says: The greatest way to get authentic employee reviews, is to ensure you have an environment that genuinely allows employees to express themselves, be human, and be key contributors in business progress and exposure projects. When companies recognise the need to consider programmes with bottom-up in mind, it engages the people at all levels, and when regular employees are the stars of the show, they demonstrate greater authentic pride, and inclined to amplify positively. 2. Educate and encourage Shaunda Zilich, Global Employment Brand Leader at GE, says: Educate employees on what candidates are seeing out there before they walk into the company. Let them know the numbers (traffic, reach, engagement) on reviews (example: over 80% of candidates now look at reviews before making a decision on employment). I am still amazed at how many of our employees are not aware of these sites or donât realize how popular they are. Encourage transparency. I donât solicit for reviews with our employees but I do encourage transparency. This is the reason review sites are so popular and usually the more reviews that are left the more real the story is. 3. Get reviews from current employees Phil Strazzula, Founder of NextWave Hire, says: Many times reviews on employee sites are from disgruntled people since there isnt a mechanism to get reviews from the typical employees in your company (hotels have done a great job of getting their patrons to leave reviews on TripAdvisor by emailing everyone after their stay, so its not just the people who had bed bugs). So, my advice to companies is not to over think it, and simply remind everyone in the company every 6-12 months that reviews are a good way to attract talent and if they have a few extra minutes to please take time to write something. 4. Timing is everything Will Staney is the Founder Principal Consultant at Proactive Talent Strategies and says: The idea is to get your employees to review the company around various company milestones. One of the ways Ive done this in the past as a TA leader is to incorporate Glassdoor into onboarding practices by asking employees in each new hire class to leave a review of their interview experience. Other ways Ive done this is while congratulating an employee on their work anniversary (Congrats on 1 year at ABC Company! Now that youre a veteran here, do you mind sharing your experience working here on Glassdoor?) or when someone is promoted (Congrats on your promotion! As an example of an employee that is truly making an impact and exuding our values, we would love if youd take a moment to share your experience and whats made you successful here on Glassdoor). Finally, as a follow up to a company event you could send an email out encouraging employees to upload photos from the event to the company Glassdoor page. You have achieved many successes, and have an impressive portfolio and reputation built on technical mastery, business acumen, industry knowledge and leadership skills. Congratulations! Youâve proven that you have the brilliance, drive, and resilience to be a successful leader in todayâs global economy. But now you crave something different. A new passion has bubbled up and you need a different career challenge. You may be thinking, Is it worth the risk to re-brand and leave my current job to switch career tracks? As a leadership coach inside a Fortune 100 company for the past 3 years, as well as having my own private practice as a career coach for the past 10 years Iâve helped more than 1,000 leaders re-brand and advance their career. In this article, Iâm sharing what Iâve learned about the biggest hurdles leaders face when re-branding and tips to overcome them. But first, letâs align on what re-branding means. Re-branding isnât changing from one company to another. Thatâs just changing your job. Re-branding involves making a major career shift and rebuilding your reputation in a different industry or job role where youâve never been before. How can you minimize the risk of re-branding so you can reap the reward? Get clear on the âwhy.â Re-branding yourself early in your career is easy. Re-branding later when youâre an established leader is tricky. Thereâs more at stake. Reputation. Lifestyle. Money. The possibility of failure. Stepping into a new role where you have little influence, smaller turf and limited brand cache is humbling. It requires courage to let go of mastery youâve worked hard to acquire. To help yourself stay strong while you forge a new career path, get clear on your motivation and why you want to change. Take inventory of what you could gain in your new role such as challenge, growth, passion, etc. Also ask, What am I losing by staying in my current situation? It may be costing you time to write that book, energy to start that new initiative, or acquiring funding to launch that new company. Getting clear on why you want to leave your current situation will help you stay the course and take action to change your career. Does re-branding mean a salary decrease? Not necessarily, but youâll need to be strategic. If you want to go from tech exec to a marketing leader, the first thing I recommend is to research the highest paying industries. PayScaleâs âEconomic trends: reflections on 2019, predictions for 2020â reveals that finance, healthcare, energy, retail, construction and real estate will be high growth industries in 2020. Keep in mind that just because you have a job in a specific niche doesnât mean that you must work in that specific industry. In other words, if youâre a leader in IT, it doesnât mean that you have to work in the IT industry. There are all kinds of industries and companies that need experts in IT, finance, sales, HR, marketing, communications, PR, customer support, legal, business operations, management, leadership and other fields. I successfully upleveled my own career four times by switching industries. Also, target the higher paying companies. There are companies within the same industry that pay more than others so do. Fortuneâs 100 Fastest Growing Companies list is based on the top three year performers in revenues, profits and stock returns. Finally, some job roles pay higher than others. I received a 32% salary increase simply by re-branding from a marketing to a technical role inside a Fortune 100 company. Same job grade, different role. Do your homework and research high paying industries, companies and job roles on sites such as GlassDoor.com and Salary.com What if I fail? There is a pivotal moment in every career change when you ask yourself, Am I REALLY going to do this? And then it happens⦠self-doubt creeps in. In our careers, as well as in life, change is always riddled with doubt. Fear of change. Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. One of the secrets of re-branding is knowing how to set yourself up for success. Since moving into a different career requires that you have different skills and experience, youâll need to be proactive and invest in yourself to skill up. Go get the advanced degree, training or specialized certification if itâs required. I worked with a General Manager at a Golf Resort who was passed over for several job opportunities after being laid off, because he wanted his next employer to pay for a required certification. In other words, he was being rejected from 6-figure jobs because he didnât have a $3k certification. Invest in yourself to get the training, education and experience you need to re-brand your career. What if you fail? There are different ways to look at failure. You could say that you fail if you donât take the shot and try to re-brand your career. Letâs take worst case scenario and say that your new company, job or initiative fails. Then what? Youâll walk away with new knowledge, new experience, and a wider network. Failures are only failures if you donât learn something from the experience. How could you use the experience as a stepping stone to your next career? And finally⦠Thereâs a kind of quiet confidence that we all have down deep inside. A confidence that comes from knowing what weâre capable of doing. Believe in yourself and others will, too.
